Windows Hello

Follow the prompts to set up fingerprint or facial recognition sign-in methods as part of the Windows Hello setup.

Note: Sign-in methods are limited by device hardware. You will be prompted for whichever methods are available on your device.

General:

  • All types of Windows Hello credentials are stored securely on the device. These credentials are not shared between devices. This means you cannot use your fingerprint/face/pin to sign in to another device unless you go through the same setup process on the second device.

Fingerprint:

  • Make sure you have clean, dry hands. Dirty or wet hands can reduce the accuracy of the sensor and affect the setup process.
  • Ensure you are always using the same finger during setup and when signing in.
  • Try not to move your finger too much between readings. The fingerprint sensor is small and will only scan a fraction of your fingerprint.
  • Have patience! Fingerprint setup can be a frustrating process when it doesn't work straight away.

Facial recognition:

  • Remove any face coverings (such as face masks) before setting up facial recognition.
  • If you wear glasses, please consider removing your glasses during the facial recognition setup.
  • Poor lighting can impact the accuracy of the sensor. If you are in a poorly lit area, try turning on a light or moving to another location

Follow the prompts to create a PIN sign-in method and complete the Windows Hello setup.

Pin code:

  • Your PIN can be used as an alternative to fingerprint or facial recognition methods.
  • By checking "include letter and symbols" you can set your pin using any keyboard characters (not just numbers!)
  • It is still important to keep your PIN private. Sharing your school account is against the school's acceptable use policy. Please do your best to keep your pins and passwords to yourself.

Once you have completed the Windows Hello setup you will be redirected to your desktop.

Note: Additional apps may continue to install in the background. In most cases, you will receive a notification when an app installation succeeds or fails.
